ABOUT OUR PERUVIAN CACAO

When you buy our Peruvian ceremonial-grade cacao, you not only receive a bag of pure chocolatey love and goodness, you are also directly supporting local farmers and families, who are striving to produce and conserve ancestral cacao and provide a fair price to everyone involved. The cacao itself is grown in the traditional way, which has a conscientious respect for the natural environment and seeks to preserve biodiversity.

Asháninka land is in the rainforests of the lower Amazon basin in Peru. They are striving to keep their cultural and environmental heritage despite pressure from the modernisation of the outside world. They live a lifestyle of subsistence, but the forest they live in is under threat, particularly from illegal logging, palm oil and coca production. So cacao is actually a vital crop for the Asháninka, for the protection of their land, and their ability to maintain their economic independence and sovereignty.

The Nomatsigenga people, along with the Ashaninka and Quechua, live in the lush rainforests of central Peru. Deeply connected to their land, these Indigenous communities are committed to preserving their ecosystems through traditional, organic, and often biodynamic farming methods. They have cultivated cacao and coffee for generations, practices that are not only sustainable but also woven into the fabric of their cultural identity.

ECUADORIAN vs PERUVIAN CACAO

Peruvian cacao is rich, deep and indulgent: it may be better suited to those who already have experience drinking cacao, but it really depends on you! We find Peruvian cacao slightly heavier and more bitter than Ecuadorian cacao, which has a lighter, smoother taste. The differences are subtle, but if you drink cacao regularly you may start to notice these distinctions in flavour, texture and how the cacao affects your meditation or shamanic journey. Each cacao has its own personality and it's just a matter of taste as to which cacao medicine suits you best! :) If you’ve never tried either cacao, why not start with our Taster Pack to see which one you prefer?
