Global Cacao Crisis Impacting Prices

The Tsatsayaku Women

Climate Change is creating havoc in the cacao industry, and we felt it important to update you on the current state of affairs, particularly regarding the global cacao price crisis that has been affecting our industry.

Unfortunately, cacao production is facing significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions. Production in Africa has seen a dramatic decline, and the situation in Ecuador is also very concerning.

As a result of this global crisis, there is now a worldwide shortage of cacao, leading to unprecedented price hikes. Over the past year, cacao prices have surged by more than 200%, reaching historic highs.

Due to a failing harvest in Ecuador this year, and the sudden rise in value of cacao, 250kg of cacao beans were stolen from the Tsatsayaku Association recently, and they’ve had to source new farmers, as well as reinforcing their security.

Because we buy our cacao in small batches, and the cost of cacao is reflected immediately, we are vulnerable to sudden price rise. However, as this is a global issue you will likely see a price increase across all cacao companies in the near future.

In response to the soaring costs and scarcity of cacao, we have regrettably been compelled to increase our prices. This decision was not taken lightly, but as a small business that wants to support our indigenous farmers and producers, we must reflect the immediate changes in cacao costs.

We understand that these sudden price changes may be challenging for our customers, but it's crucial to recognise the broader implications of this crisis. Due to the enormous and uncontrollable rising cost of cacao, many small cacao businesses and artisanal chocolate brands are now at risk.

Making it exceedingly difficult for independent businesses to survive, let alone thrive in this challenging market. The dominance of large corporations in the market further fuels these challenges.

Companies prioritising profit over ethics contribute to the exploitation of resources and undermine the sustainability of the industry. Now, more than ever, it's essential to support small, ethical businesses that value ethics, quality, and sustainability.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued loyalty to Ritual Cacao during these trying times. Your support enables us to navigate these challenges and continue our mission of providing high-quality, ethically sourced products.

By supporting small businesses, buying local, and investing in independent initiatives, you are making a BIG difference.
